Are you an experienced accounting professional with a passion for leadership and systems thinking? This is your opportunity to play a key role in delivering Wollongong City Council’s asset management strategies and ensuring financial integrity for our community.
The opportunity
As Senior Accountant – Assets, you’ll lead a small, dedicated team responsible for Council’s Asset Accounting function. You’ll play a key role in management of Council's asset data with a gross value in excess of $7 billion. You will also collaborate across Council on asset reporting, revaluations, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and legislation. Working closely with the Financial Services Manager and other Senior Accountants, you’ll influence strategic decisions, improve processes, and ensure accurate, timely information that supports sustainable asset management.
This is a leadership role with hands-on responsibilities—mentoring your team, collaborating across divisions, and partnering with external stakeholders such as the Audit Office and other government agencies. Your work will directly contribute to the delivery of Council’s asset management plans and long-term financial sustainability.
This is a Permanent Full-Time position. Salary from $109,230.17 up to $130,956.30 per annum, plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications)
What you will be doing
Lead and manage the Asset Accounting team, fostering a positive and high-performing culture.
Oversee asset accounting processes including data integrity, reporting, revaluations, and compliance.
Provide expert advice on accounting standards and asset policies.
Collaborate with internal teams to integrate asset accounting with asset management and project budgeting.
Drive continuous improvement in systems, processes, and reporting.
Contribute to major finance projects such as annual financial statements and strategic planning.

A recognised accounting degree (as defined by CPA Australia).
Strong technical accounting expertise and the ability to interpret and apply standards in a practical way.
A systems mindset—you’re comfortable working with large ERP systems and know how to leverage technology for better outcomes.
Strategic thinking combined with operational strength—you can plan, prioritise, and deliver while keeping an eye on continuous improvement.
Leadership experience, including coaching and performance management.
A business acumen, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to values, teamwork, and creating a positive work environment.
